Berkana Consulting Group was founded in 1997 by Chris Hyland. After 10 years of institutional consulting, he formed Berkana to provide innovative and flexible leadership development programs solidly based on the needs of his clients. Today Berkana is recognized as a firm committed to transforming leaders. The company is respected for its personalized approach, its integrity, and its perseverance to attaining client goals.

Berkana is an ancient Nordic word meaning "growth & transformation." Berkana Consulting Group is committed to the growth and development of leaders. It is our belief that leaders truly shape our institutions, our community and ultimately, our world.

Christopher J. Hyland

Chris, the founder and President of Berkana, is a renowned and respected Executive Coach with over 200 past and present clients. He has over 20 years of organizational consulting and leadership training experience in Africa, South and North America, specializing in service industries, healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing. Chris also developed and managed the healthcare division of a major productivity improvement company in the US.

He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town in South Africa with a degree in Industrial Psychology and Sociology with post-graduate degree in Economics from Stellenbosch University.

 

 

Betty L. Shotton

Betty is a Partner with Berkana Consulting Group with over 25 years experience as a CEO, Entrepreneur, and Leadership Consultant. Her business career started at a Fortune 500 where she was an Internal Consultant responsible for organizational design, development and succession planning. She moved into Human Resource management and experienced the full breadth of human resource responsibilities including labor relations with two large unions.

With a move to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, she became the founder and CEO of several recognized companies in vacation rentals and aviation. The largest and most successful of her endeavors was sold on the NYSE.
Today Betty is an active consultant to executives and leaders with an emphasis on strategic visioning and planning, succession planning, individual coaching and team facilitation.

Betty holds a BA from the University of Virginia. She studied at the Graduate Business School of William & Mary, and completed her MBA in Marketing & Human Resources at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Betty is an ATP Pilot with commercial privileges.
